Professor John Dowling is currently a sessional dermatopathologist at Dorevitch Pathology. He has had a long-term and continuing interest in dermatopathology and kidney pathology.
Prof Dowling trained as a pathology registrar at St Vincent’s Hospital, The Royal Melbourne, The Austin Hospital and Prince Henry’s Hospital. He stayed at Prince Henry’s Hospital after graduation as a staff pathologist, before gaining a promotion to move to The Royal Melbourne Hospital as Deputy Director of Anatomical Pathology. Prof Dowling returned to Prince Henry’s Hospital, this time as the Director of Tissue Pathology before once again moving to the Royal Melbourne Hospital, again as Deputy Director. His final move within the public health system was to The Alfred, where he was Head of Anatomical Pathology from 1994 to 2004.
Prof Dowling is past-president of the Australasian Dermatopathology Society and has been a tutor in the discipline of candidates for both the Australasian Colleges of Pathology and Dermatopathology. He is currently one of the reviewers of pathology for the Victorian Melanoma Service directed by Professor John Kelly at the Alfred Hospital and has been since inception.
