Biography

Dr Afaq Khan is a Specialist Histopathologist and Cytopathologist, who graduated with Honours from Monash University in 1981, obtained his Fellowship in Pathology and FMGMS in 1988, and his Fellowship in Cytology in 1992. He completed his training as an Intern at Alfred Hospital in 1982. From 1983-85 he lectured in Pathology at Monash University Department of Pathology and Immunology at Alfred Hospital.

Following this he worked as a Pathology Registrar at Western General and Prince Henry’s Hospitals from 1986-88. From 1989-93 he was a Consultant Pathologist at Gribbles Pathology (now ACL) and from 1993-95 Deputy Director of Pathology, Mercy Hospital for Women and Head of Pathology, Werribee Mercy Hospital. He worked at DOR Pathology from 1995-2009 and was Pathologist-in-Charge of their Knox Private Hospital Pathology Laboratory. Afaq joined Healthscope Pathology (now ACL) in 2009 as Director of Pathology at their Knox Laboratory prior to joining the Anatomical Pathology team at St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne in 2011. He became Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer at the University of Melbourne in 2015 and Adjunct Senior Lecturer at Flinders University in 2019. Afaq then worked as Director of Anatomical Pathology at Territory Pathology at Royal Darwin Hospital from 2018-2021 prior to re-joining DOR Pathology.

Afaq’s areas of special interest include Dermatopathology, Cytopathology, Gynaecological Pathology, Gastrointestinal Pathology, Cardiothoracic Pathology, Urogenital Pathology, Tumour Pathology, Immunopathology, Digital Pathology, Medical Informatics and AI.
